How are running calories calculated?
The number of calories you burn while running primarily depends on your weight and the distance you covered. While pacing and metabolic efficiency play a small part, moving your body mass over a specific distance requires a set amount of energy at a fundamental physics level.
The Science Behind the Formula
This calculator uses the widely accepted formula: 1.036 calories per kilogram of body weight per kilometer run. This provides your gross energy expenditure. Another commonly used rough estimate for runners using imperial measurements is: you burn approximately 100 calories per mile run (for a 150lb person).
Does running faster burn more calories?
Running faster burns more calories per minute, but because you finish the distance quicker, the total calorie burn per mile or kilometer remains roughly identical whether you run an 8-minute mile or a 12-minute mile. What changes is the "afterburn" effect (EPOC), where high-intensity running can cause your body to continue burning calories at an elevated rate long after you have finished your workout.
