Average 10K Time by Age

Projected 10K finish times and paces by age and gender, plus what actually counts as a good 10K time.

The 10K (6.2 miles) sits right between the sprint-adjacent 5K and the endurance test of a half marathon. It rewards runners who can hold a hard-but-sustainable pace for close to an hour, which makes "what's a good 10K time" a genuinely useful question to answer with actual pacing benchmarks.

How We Calculated These Numbers

These are estimates, not race results

We don't have a 10K race dataset. Instead, we projected the average 5K finish times from our Average 5K Time by Age page using the Riegel endurance formula, T2 = T1 × (D2/D1)^1.06, a standard way to estimate a runner's time at a new distance from a known time at another distance. Every number below is a calculated projection, not a measured 10K result. We also kept the 5K source data's "60+" grouping as-is on the 10K side rather than inventing a 70+ split we have no basis for.

What Counts as a Good 10K Time?

"Good" depends entirely on who you're comparing yourself to. Using the same Riegel projection applied to the 30-39 age bracket as a general adult reference point, here's roughly how the bands break down:

Competitive

MenSub 42:34
WomenSub 50:44

Roughly the fastest 5% of adult 30-39 runners, projected to 10K.

Good

Men42:34 - 52:39
Women50:44 - 1:01:30

Roughly the fastest 20% of adult 30-39 runners, projected to 10K.

Average

Men52:39 - 1:06:43
Women1:01:30 - 1:16:37

The median (P50) time for adult 30-39 runners, projected to 10K.

Beginner

MenOver 1:06:43
WomenOver 1:16:37

Slower than the projected median — completely normal for a first 10K.

How to Improve Your 10K Time

Moving from the "Average" band into "Good" is mostly a matter of structured, consistent training rather than raw talent.

  1. Follow a real training block: A structured 10K training plan for beginners builds your mileage gradually instead of guessing week to week.
  2. Learn to pace the middle miles: Most 10K runners go out too fast. A running pace strategy keeps kilometers 3 through 8 even instead of fading late.
  3. Add weekly speed sessions: Interval training for beginner runners raises your top-end speed, which makes your 10K goal pace feel easier to hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 60 minute 10K good?
Yes. A 60:00 10K (6:00/km or 9:39/mile pace) is faster than our projected average finish time for every age and gender group in the tables above, including the fastest group, men aged 20-29. It sits close to the "Good" band for most adult men and comfortably inside the "Competitive" band for most adult women.
What is a good 10K time for a 40 year old?
Based on our projections, the average 10K time for a 40-49 year old is around 1:09:30 for men and 1:19:45 for women. Beating that average, and getting closer to 55-60 minutes (men) or 1:05-1:10 (women), would count as a good time for that age group.
How long does it take the average person to run 10K?
It varies a lot by age and gender, but our projections put the typical adult finish time somewhere between about 1:05 and 1:40. Younger men tend to sit at the fast end of that range and older women at the slow end, with everyone else somewhere in between — see the tables above for your specific bracket.
What is a good 10K time for a beginner?
For a first 10K, simply finishing is the win. Most beginners land somewhere between 1:10 and 1:30+, which lines up with the slower half of the age-group averages projected above. There is no shame in the beginner band — everyone starts there.
What pace do I need to run a sub-60-minute 10K?
You need to average 6:00 per kilometer, or about 9:39 per mile, for the full 10 kilometers. Our pace calculator and race time predictor can help you build a training plan around that target pace.
Is a 50 minute 10K good?
Yes — 50:00 (5:00/km or roughly 8:03/mile) is a fast time. It falls inside our projected "Competitive" band for adult men and is faster than the projected "Competitive" band for adult women, making it a strong result for almost any age group.
How much slower is a 10K than a 5K?
It's not simply double your 5K time. Fatigue compounds over distance, so most runners slow down proportionally more than the extra distance alone would suggest. That's the entire basis for the Riegel formula we used to build this page: it multiplies your 5K time by roughly 2.08, not 2.0, to project a realistic 10K time.
Does 10K time slow down with age?
Yes, gradually. In our projected tables, the average 10K time increases by a few minutes with each decade, with a larger step after age 60. The pattern mirrors what shows up in the underlying 5K averages we projected from.
