Completing a marathon (26.2 miles or 42.195 kilometers) is an achievement that eludes 99% of the global population. So what exactly constitutes a "normal" completion time?
The Global Average
Across all non-elite runners worldwide, the average finish time is roughly four hours and twenty-six minutes. This equates to an average pace of 10:10 per mile (6:19 per kilometer).
The Breakdown: Men vs. Women
Because of physiological differences in cardiovascular capacity (VO2 Max) and muscle mass, male and female averages differ by roughly 30 to 40 minutes at the amateur level.
Men's Average
Avg Pace: 9:42 / mile
Women's Average
Avg Pace: 10:46 / mile
What is a "Good" Time?
"Good" is highly subjective. A time that is a personal best for one person might be a disappointment for another. However, statistically speaking, breaking certain barriers puts you in elite company.
- Sub 3 Hours: Less than 2% of marathon finishers ever break the magical 3-hour barrier. This requires holding a blistering 6:51/mile pace.
- Sub 4 Hours: Finishing under 4 hours is the holy grail for amateur runners. This puts you in roughly the top 30% of finishers worldwide.
- Sub 5 Hours: Finishing under 5 hours is an excellent milestone for first-timers and older age groups.

The Rule of Consistency
Finishing a marathon is not about having incredible genetics; it is about logging massive amounts of easy, low-heart-rate miles in the 16 weeks leading up to the race.
