Is a 1-hour 10K good?

Short answer

Yes. A 1-hour 10K is 6:00 per km (9:39 per mile). In real 10K races that is about 10 minutes faster than the average woman (1:09:40) and only 90 seconds behind the average man (58:30).

Breaking one hour is the classic 10K goal. It is a clean number, and it means holding the same steady pace for 10 kilometres (6.2 miles). Here is what a 1-hour 10K means in km and miles, your splits, how it compares with real race results, and what it predicts for other distances. Every time on this page is calculated from the distance and the clock, so the numbers always add up.

Pace per mile9:39
Speed in km/h10.0 km/h
Speed in mph6.2 mph
Halfway (5 km)30:00

The easy rule: six minutes per kilometre. It is the same pace as a 30-minute 5K, held for twice as long. In miles, aim for 9:39, a little faster than a 10-minute mile (see is a 10-minute mile good).

Source: RunRepeat, The State of Running (107.9 million race results from 1986 to 2018; average 10K pace 5:51 per km for men and 6:58 per km for women; Switzerland has the fastest country average at 52:42), opened November 2026. Finish times worked out by Run&Grow from those paces.

So what does that mean? 10K races draw a more trained crowd than 5Ks, which is why the averages are fairly quick. Even so, a 1-hour 10K puts you well ahead of the average woman and right next to the average man. For averages by age and gender, see average 10K time by age.

Working toward sub-60, or past it? Here is the pace each 10K time needs, and the 5K it matches:

Every minute off your 10K is 6 seconds per km, or about 10 seconds per mile. The “matching 5K” column uses the Riegel formula, so it shows the 5K time that usually goes with each 10K.

Marathon (26.2 mi)4:13:104:36:01

The Riegel formula (time × (distance ratio)1.06) adds a little time as races get longer and takes some off as they get shorter. It assumes you have trained for each distance. Plug in your own times with the race time predictor, or see average half marathon time by age for the next step up.

How to run a 10K in under 1 hour

  1. Run three or four times a week. Mostly easy, at a pace where you can talk.
  2. Build a long run to 12 km. Going a bit past 10 km in training makes race day feel easier.
  3. Add one pace session. For example, 4 × 2 km at a little under 6:00 per km, with 3 minutes easy between.
  4. Start steady. Use the split table. Passing 5 km in about 30:00 is ideal; going out much faster usually costs you later.

Already close? If your 5K is around 28:47, you have the speed and just need the distance (see is a 30-minute 5K good). The big thing is months of steady running. That is where Run&Grow helps: every GPS run grows a plant in your garden, so an easy recovery jog counts just as much as a fast session. It reads runs from Apple Health, so runs saved from your Apple Watch or another app count too. No public feed and no pace shaming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 1 hour 10K good?
Yes. A 1-hour 10K is 6:00 per km (9:39 per mile). In RunRepeat’s race data the average woman runs 10K in about 1:09:40, so you would be 10 minutes ahead, and the average man runs about 58:30, just 90 seconds faster than you.
What pace is a 60 minute 10K?
6:00 per kilometre, or 9:39 per mile. That is 10.0 km/h or about 6.2 mph on a treadmill. You pass 5 km in 30:00.
Is a 1 hour 10K good for a beginner?
Yes, it is a great goal for a first or second 10K. Many beginners finish between 1:05 and 1:20, often with a few walk breaks. Most people who can already run 5K without stopping can reach sub-60 with a few months of steady training.
What 5K time do I need for a sub 1 hour 10K?
Using the Riegel formula, a 1-hour 10K matches a 5K of about 28:47. If your 5K is a little under 29 minutes, a sub-60 10K is within reach once you have trained for the longer distance.
What half marathon time does a 1 hour 10K predict?
About 2:12:23 for a half marathon and 4:36:01 for a marathon, using the Riegel formula. Those assume proper training for the longer race; they are a guide, not a promise.
