Short answer

Yes, it is a solid pace, especially for a newer runner. A 12-minute mile is 7:27 per km (5.0 mph). Held for a 5K it gives 37:17, about 1:45 faster than the average US 5K finisher (39:02) and faster than roughly half of women in US 5K races.

A 12-minute mile is where a lot of runners start, and where many experienced runners do their easy runs. It is a steady jog: faster than a brisk walk, slow enough to hold a conversation for most people. People often ask if it is “bad”. It is not. Below: what a 12-minute mile means in km and mph, how it compares with real race results, and what it gives you over a 5K, 10K, half and full marathon. Every time on this page is calculated from the pace, so the numbers always add up.

In the UK and Australia most watches show km, so the number to remember is 7:27 per km. If your watch says 7:30 per km, you are running just slower than a 12-minute mile. On a treadmill, 5.0 mph is an easy round number to set.

How a 12-minute mile compares with real runners

There is no big public data set of one-mile times for everyday runners, so the fairest test is 5K results. Here is how a 12-minute mile (a 37:17 5K) stacks up, as of November 2026:

Sources: RunRepeat’s US 5K stats page (2018 US race results, about 2.6 million participants, parkrun not included; median = 50th percentile of its recreational 5K table) and The Running Channel’s average parkrun times (as of August 2025, walkers included). Paces calculated by Run&Grow.

What this tells you: in a typical US 5K, a 12-minute-mile runner beats the average finisher by about 1:45. In RunRepeat’s percentile table, 37:17 sits between the 50th percentile for women (36:24) and the 60th (40:14), so you are faster than a little under half of women. For men it sits between the 60th (34:15) and 70th (38:17) percentile, so you are faster than about a third of men. At parkrun the average is quicker, because many regulars run every week: a 12-minute mile puts you a few minutes behind the UK, Australian and US parkrun averages. A 12-minute mile is a very common pace for a first half marathon (2:37:19) or first marathon (5:14:38). Most big marathons keep the course open for at least six hours, so a 12-minute-mile runner has plenty of room, but always check your race’s time limit. For comparison, the average finisher at the 2025 New York City Marathon took 4:32:25 (Marathon Handbook, as of November 2025). The next step up for most runners is the 10-minute mile (a 5K of about 31 minutes), and after that the 30-minute 5K, which needs about 9:39 per mile. Going from 12:00 to 11:00 per mile cuts about 3 minutes off your 5K.

How to get faster than a 12-minute mile

  1. Run more often, not harder. Three easy runs a week does more than one hard one. If you cannot run a full mile yet, start with our couch to 5K plan or the run-walk interval calculator.
  2. Add strides. At the end of one run a week, do 4 to 6 short, relaxed bursts of 20 seconds.
  3. Test it once a month. Four laps of a 400 m track is just short of a mile (1,609 m). A 12-minute mile is about 2:59 per lap.
  4. Be patient. Most new runners get faster for months just by staying consistent.

That consistency is where Run&Grow helps. Every GPS run grows a plant in your garden, so a slow 12-minute mile counts just as much as a fast one. It reads runs from Apple Health, so runs saved from your Apple Watch or another app count too. No public feed, no pace shaming, and if you skip a week, your garden waits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 12 minute mile good?
Yes, especially if you are new to running. A 12-minute mile is 7:27 per km (5.0 mph). Held for a 5K it gives 37:17, which is 1:45 faster than the average US 5K finisher (39:02) and close to the median woman (36:24).
Is a 12 minute mile bad?
No. It is a normal, healthy running pace. Plenty of runners do their easy runs at 12 minutes per mile or slower, and many race finishers are slower too. A 12-minute mile is a jog, not a walk: a brisk walk is usually 15 to 20 minutes per mile.
How fast is a 12 minute mile in mph?
A 12-minute mile is exactly 5.0 miles per hour, or about 8.0 km/h. Set a treadmill to 5.0 mph to run it.
How long is a 5K at a 12 minute mile pace?
37:17. A 5K is 3.107 miles, so 3.107 × 12 minutes is just over 37 minutes. A 10K at the same pace takes 1:14:34.
How long is a marathon at a 12 minute mile pace?
5:14:38. A half marathon at the same pace takes 2:37:19. For comparison, the average finisher at the 2025 New York City Marathon took 4:32:25.
