What changed: Year in Sport went behind the paywall
For almost ten years, Year in Sport was free for everyone. In December 2025 that changed. Strava made the 2025 recap available only to subscribers, along with monthly stat cards. Strava’s reasoning, as reported by road.cc on 23 December 2025, was that with the relaunch of its subscription it wanted to make the paid benefits clearer, while keeping uploading, kudos, sharing and community free.
Many free users were not happy, and some said the recap mostly repeats numbers that are already in your profile. Others felt a paid tier is fair.
Garmin did the same thing. On 3 December 2025 Garmin made its own yearly recap, the Garmin Connect Rundown, available only to Garmin Connect+ subscribers. So if you were hoping to switch apps for a free recap, the two biggest names now both charge for it.
When will Strava Year in Sport 2026 come out?
Strava has not given a date (as of October 2026). Here is what last year tells us:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 3 Dec 2025 | Strava published its 12th annual Year in Sport trend report. Garmin paywalled its Connect Rundown the same day. |
| Week of 7 Dec 2025 | US Google searches for “strava year in sport” hit their yearly peak (Google Trends). |
| 20–23 Dec 2025 | News sites reported that the personal recap was now subscriber-only. |
| Late Nov–mid Dec 2026 | Our estimate for the 2026 recap, based on the dates above. Not confirmed by Strava. |

Local notes: US, UK and Australia
- US: A Thanksgiving turkey trot (Thursday 26 November 2026) is a nice last big run to finish your year on.
- UK: Christmas Day and New Year’s Day parkruns are a favourite way to round off the running year — check your local event page for special dates. See our parkrun beginner’s guide.
- Australia: December is early summer. If you are chasing a year-end distance goal, run early in the morning to beat the heat.
Why a year-end recap is not enough
A recap is fun once a year. But the thing that makes a good running year is showing up week after week, and a December summary does not help much in March. If you like seeing your progress, pick a setup that shows it all year: rings in the Fitness app, a monthly check of your data, or a gamified running app that turns each run into something you can see.
