The quick answer
- Pay if you explore new routes, chase segments, or train for a race and like data.
- Skip it if you run a few times a week and just want to log runs and see friends.
- Not sure? Use the 30-day free trial, and set a reminder for day 28.
- Want a training plan? That now comes from Runna, which is a separate cost (or the Strava + Runna bundle).

The yearly plan is the better deal. In the US, 12 months at $11.99 is $143.88, while the yearly plan is $79.99 — about $6.67 a month. In the UK, monthly adds up to £107.88 a year against £54.99 for the yearly plan.
What you get free vs what you pay for
This list follows the comparison table on Strava’s own subscribe page. The short version: recording and social stay free; routes, goals, leaderboards and deeper data are paid.
| Feature | Free | Subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Record your runs (GPS, pace, distance) | ||
| Feed, kudos, clubs and following friends | ||
| Safety features (live location sharing) | ||
| Suggested routes and offline routes | ||
| Draw your own routes | ||
| Training history in one place | ||
| Advanced workout insights | ||
| Custom goals | ||
| Full segment leaderboards | ||
| Create challenges with friends | ||
| Effort across activities and Fitness Score |
Free users can still see the top of segment leaderboards and still earn personal records. Strava first moved full leaderboards and the route builder behind the paywall in May 2020, and the split has grown since.
Who Strava Premium is worth it for
You run new places a lot
Suggested routes, offline maps and the route builder are the most practical paid features. Great if you travel, run trails, or are bored of the same loop.
You love chasing segments
Free users only see part of each leaderboard. If racing your local hill or bridge is what gets you out the door, the subscription is the whole point.
You train for races with data
Fitness Score, effort across activities and the training history help you see whether a plan is working. Useful when you have a goal race on the calendar.
Who should skip it
- You run 1–2 times a week and mostly just want to log it.
- You already pay for a watch app (like Garmin Connect) that shows the same data.
- Leaderboards make you feel worse, not better.
- What you really need is a reason to keep going, not more charts.

The cost-per-run test
Here is a simple way to decide. Divide the yearly price by the runs you will really do in a year:
| Runs per week | Runs per year | Cost per run (US, $79.99/yr) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 52 | about $1.54 |
| 3 | 156 | about $0.51 |
| 5 | 260 | about $0.31 |
Then ask: “Would I pay that much each run for routes, leaderboards and charts?” If you run three times a week and use routes every weekend, 51 cents a run is cheap. If you run once a week and never open the paid screens, it is money for nothing.
What changed at Strava in 2026
- Training plans moved to Runna. Strava bought the plan app Runna in May 2025, and new running plans now come from Runna, which is not part of the normal Strava subscription. The Strava + Runna bundle is yearly only.
- Runna’s beginner plans are paid now. Since 5 June 2026, New to Running, Return to Running and Path to parkrun need Runna Premium after Week 1. That matters for new runners in the UK and Australia, where parkrun is huge.
- Guided strength workouts. On 15 October 2026 Strava announced coach-designed strength workouts with live set and rep tracking. They are rolling out to subscribers, with one sample workout for free users.
How to pay less (the legit ways)
- Start with the 30-day free trial. Strava reminds you 2 days before it ends. Cancel at least 24 hours before if you do not want it.
- Pay yearly, not monthly. It is about 44% cheaper over a year.
- Students: verified students get about 50% off ($39.99 a year in the US, A$49.99 in Australia).
- US teachers, military and medical workers: 25% off individual plans.
- Share a Family plan: up to 4 people on one yearly plan.
There is no official way to get the full subscription free forever. Be careful with sites that promise “free Strava Premium”.
If you skip it: what to use instead
The free Strava account is still a good log and a good way to see your friends’ runs. Many runners keep it free and add one more app for the thing Strava does not give them:
- Free audio coaching: Nike Run Club is still free. See our Nike Run Club vs Strava comparison.
- A reason to keep going: Run&Grow grows a plant in your garden for every run. It reads runs from Apple Health, so runs from your Apple Watch or another app can count too. No public feed and no pace shaming.
- Pace planning for free: our running pace calculator does the maths the paid charts would.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does Strava Premium cost in 2026?
- As of October 2026, the Strava subscription is $11.99 a month or $79.99 a year in the US, £8.99 a month or £54.99 a year in the UK, and A$14.99 a month or A$99.99 a year in Australia (App Store prices). The yearly plan works out to about $6.67 a month in the US.
- Can I get Strava Premium for free?
- Only for a while. New subscribers get a 30-day free trial. After that there is no official free version of the subscription, but verified students pay about half price, and in the US teachers, military and medical workers get 25% off individual plans. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you do not want to pay.
- Is Strava still free?
- Yes. A free Strava account still lets you record runs, follow friends, give kudos, join clubs and use the safety features. Routes, full segment leaderboards, custom goals, the deeper training data and the Fitness Score need the subscription.
- Is the Strava + Runna bundle worth it?
- Only if you want a structured training plan. The bundle is $149.99 a year in the US (£119.99 in the UK, A$199.99 in Australia), annual only. That is about $50 less than buying Strava ($79.99) and Runna ($119.99) separately each year, and about $30 more than Runna on its own.
- Is Strava Premium worth it for beginners?
- Usually not at first. Most beginners need a reason to keep running, not segment leaderboards or Fitness Score charts. Use the free tier for a few months. If you later find yourself wanting routes, goals or deeper stats, start the 30-day trial then.

Keep Strava free. Add a garden.
