Search “Couch to 5K” in the App Store and you get a pile of apps with almost the same name. That is why “is the Couch to 5K app free?” is such a common question: the answer depends on which one you open. One is fully free. Others give you a taste and then ask you to pay. Here is which is which, what each one costs in the US and UK, and how to do the whole plan without paying anything, as of November 2026.

Why there are so many “Couch to 5K” apps
Couch to 5K started as a plan, not an app. Josh Clark created it in 1996, and it spread through the Cool Running website: about nine weeks, three runs a week, 20 to 30 minutes each, mixing running and walking until you can run 5K. Cool Running later became part of Active.com, run by ACTIVE Network, which still sells a Couch to 5K® app. Zen Labs built its own popular C25K® app on the same plan. In 2016 the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care and the BBC launched the NHS Couch to 5K app, which turned 10 in April 2026 and has passed 8 million downloads, according to RunABC. Add in lots of smaller copycats and you get a crowded App Store.
The four apps, one by one
Free · iPhone and Android
NHS Couch to 5K
The free one. A run-walk plan that builds you up to 30 minutes of running, three runs a week, in as little as 9 weeks or at your own pace. You pick a trainer, including well-known coaches and presenters, who tells you when to run and when to walk. It works with your music and has a graduation step called Beyond Couch to 5K.
The catch: Made for the UK. We could confirm its UK App Store listing; if it does not show in your country’s store, the NHS also has a free PDF of the same plan.

C25K® 5K Running Coach & Map (Zen Labs)
A popular C25K app, rated 4.8 from about 172K ratings on the US App Store and based on the original Couch to 5K plan. The first week is free. To keep going you unlock the full program ($29.99 one-off on the US App Store) or buy a Zen Unlimited Pass ($4.99 a month or $74.99 a year), which also adds pro extras such as calories, distance and Apple Watch features. It saves workouts to the Health app.
The catch: You will hit a paywall after week 1. Pick the one-off unlock if you only want the 5K plan.

Couch to 5K Runner (Fitness22)
An 8-week plan app. The free version includes the first four runs with all features turned on. After that you need Premium: the UK App Store lists subscriptions from £6.99 and lifetime options from £9.99. It saves workouts to Apple Health.
The catch: Several prices are listed for the same products, so check the price shown in the app before you pay.

Couch to 5K® (ACTIVE Network)
The app from ACTIVE Network, the company behind Active.com, which took over the Cool Running site where the original plan was published. On Google Play it is a $4.99 paid app with no free tier listed, according to App Pricing Lab (last updated September 2025).
The catch: Not free, but a one-off price with no subscription.

Is the NHS Couch to 5K app free in the US and Australia?
The app costs nothing anywhere it is offered: there is no paid tier. The question is whether you can download it. It is built by the UK government, and we could only confirm its UK App Store listing, where it is rated 4.8 from about 402K ratings. If it does not appear in your US or Australian store, you still have free options:
- The NHS Couch to 5K page has a free PDF of the plan. Week 1 starts with 1 minute of running and 1 minute 30 seconds of walking.
- Our free couch to 5K plan lays out each week, and the couch to 5K calculator tells you the date you will run your first 5K.
- The run-walk interval calculator helps if you want to set your own run and walk times.
In Australia and the UK, the natural goal at the end of the plan is a Saturday parkrun, which is a free, timed 5K. In the US, a local turkey trot or charity 5K works just as well.
Is it worth paying for a Couch to 5K app?
For most beginners, no. The plan is the same idea in every app: run a bit, walk a bit, run a bit longer each week. The free NHS app does that well. Paying makes sense if you want something the free app lacks, such as Apple Watch features, GPS distance in the same app, or a slightly different plan length. If you do pay, a one-off unlock is usually cheaper than a subscription you forget to cancel. If you subscribe through Apple, you can cancel in your iPhone’s Settings under your Apple ID.
There are also free running apps that are not called Couch to 5K but still help beginners. Nike Run Club is free and has guided runs, and Map My Run’s free version tracks every run with GPS. For a side-by-side list, see our best couch to 5K apps guide.
After week 9: keep going
The hardest part of Couch to 5K is not week 5. It is week 10, when the plan ends and nobody tells you when to run any more. That is where Run&Grow comes in. It is not a Couch to 5K plan. It is a free iPhone run tracker where every run grows a plant in your garden, so you can see your running build up over time. It reads runs from Apple Health, so a run saved by your Apple Watch or by another app that writes to Health can count too. Run&Grow does not have its own Apple Watch app yet. There is no public feed and no pace shaming, and if you skip a week, your garden waits.
Once you can run 5K, you may wonder how your time compares. For reference, the average finisher in US 5K races took 39:02 in 2018, according to RunRepeat. See is a 30-minute 5K good, or if you have got faster, is a 9-minute mile good. For more ways to make running feel like a game, read gamified running apps.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Couch to 5K app free?
- The NHS Couch to 5K app is completely free: no subscription and no in-app purchases on its App Store listing as of November 2026. Other apps with “Couch to 5K” or “C25K” in the name are free to download but charge to finish the plan. For example, the Zen Labs C25K app gives you week 1 free, and Couch to 5K Runner gives you the first four runs free.
- How much does the C25K app cost?
- On the US App Store, the Zen Labs C25K® app lists a one-off “Unlock Your Potential” purchase at $29.99 for the full program, or a Zen Unlimited Pass at $4.99 a month or $74.99 a year, as of November 2026. There is also a $1.99 option to remove ads. Prices can change and tax may be added.
- Can I use the NHS Couch to 5K app outside the UK?
- It is made by the UK government for people in England, and we could only confirm its UK App Store listing. If you cannot find it in your country’s store, the NHS website has a free PDF version of the same 9-week plan, and our free couch to 5K plan page follows the same idea.
- How long is the Couch to 5K plan?
- The classic plan is 9 weeks with 3 runs a week, ending with 30 minutes of running without stopping. The NHS app lets you go slower if you need to repeat a week. Couch to 5K Runner uses an 8-week plan.
- Do I need a Couch to 5K app at all?
- No. A plan on paper and a timer work fine. An app just tells you when to run and walk so you do not have to watch the clock. Any free running app can record the runs, and if you want a gentle reason to keep going after week 9, Run&Grow grows a plant in your garden for every run.
