What is the holiday run streak?
The holiday run streak is a simple challenge made popular by Runner’s World: run at least 1 mile (1.6 km) every single day from US Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. No pace target. No distance target beyond the mile. Just don’t miss a day.
It works because the holidays are exactly when running habits fall apart. Short days, cold mornings, parties, travel. A tiny daily goal is easy to protect, and by January you have a habit instead of a resolution.
2026 dates for your country
Thu 26 Nov 2026 → Fri 1 Jan 2027
37 days, Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day.
Tue 1 Dec 2026 → Fri 1 Jan 2027
32 days. No Thanksgiving? Start on 1 December.
In Australia and New Zealand this is a summer streak, not a winter one. Run early in the morning before the heat, carry water on longer days, and see our hydration guide. In the US, UK and Canada, it is dark and cold, so our cold-weather running gear and running in bad weather posts will help.
The rules (there are only three)
- At least 1 mile (1.6 km) of running every day. Slow is fine. Run-walk is fine for beginners.
- Treadmill miles count. So do laps of the block at 10 pm.
- Your body beats the streak. If you are ill or hurt, stop. You can always start a new streak.
A simple week-by-week plan
The plan below follows the US dates. If you start on 1 December, just skip the first few days.
| Dates | Theme | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 26 Nov – 2 Dec | Just the mile | 1 easy mile every day. Nothing more. Lay out your kit the night before. |
| 3 – 9 Dec | Pick two longer days | Keep 5 days at 1 mile. Make 2 days a bit longer if you feel good. |
| 10 – 16 Dec | Explore week | Run a new street or park each day. New routes make short runs fun. |
| 17 – 23 Dec | Busy week | Parties and travel. Run first thing in the morning, or do 1 mile on a treadmill. |
| 24 – 31 Dec | Holiday week | Run with family or friends. A slow festive mile still counts. |
| 1 Jan | Finish line | Run your New Year’s Day mile. Then take a rest day. You earned it. |

How to keep the streak alive
- Run before the day gets busy. Holiday evenings fill up fast. A morning mile is a mile nobody can cancel.
- Keep most days easy. You should be able to talk the whole way. Save harder runs for one or two days a week, if any.
- Have a backup mile. Know your treadmill, your hotel gym, or a 10-minute loop near family.
- Make it visible. Cross off a calendar, post a daily photo, or use an app that turns each run into something you can see. Our running streak calculator shows how far your streak will take you.
- Tell someone. A friend doing the streak with you is the best motivation there is.

When to stop the streak
A streak is a tool, not a test. Stop and rest if you have pain that makes you limp or change your stride, or if you are ill with a fever or chest symptoms. Missing one day does not undo the fitness you built. It only resets a number.
Make it a game
The hardest part of a 37-day streak is days 10 to 25, when the excitement wears off and it is not over yet. That is where a game layer helps. In Run&Grow, every run grows a new plant in your garden, so you can watch the streak turn into something real. It reads your runs from Apple Health, so treadmill miles and runs from your Apple Watch or another app count too. And if life gets in the way, your garden keeps every plant you have grown.

Frequently Asked Questions
- When is the 2026 holiday run streak?
- The classic version runs from US Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. In 2026 that is Thursday 26 November 2026 to Friday 1 January 2027: 37 days in a row. If you are not in the US, a simple version is 1 December to 1 January: 32 days.
- What are the rules of a holiday run streak?
- Run at least 1 mile (1.6 km) every day of the streak. That is it. Treadmill miles count, slow miles count, and most days should be easy. There is no prize except finishing.
- Is running every day for 37 days safe for beginners?
- For most healthy people, 1 easy mile a day is a small load. The risk comes from running every day hard or long. Keep most days short and easy, and stop if you feel pain that changes how you run, or if you are ill with a fever or chest symptoms. A broken streak is better than an injury.
- Does walking count in a run streak?
- In the classic run streak, the mile should be running, but it can be very slow, and run-walk is fine for beginners. If you are not ready for 1 mile of running, do a walking streak instead. The habit is the point.
- What app can I use to track a run streak?
- Any GPS running app works. If you want the streak to feel like a game, Run&Grow grows a plant for every run, so 37 days becomes a 37-plant garden by New Year’s Day. It reads your runs from Apple Health, so you can keep using your Apple Watch or another app. It is free on iPhone.
